Postpartum Mental Health: frequently asked questions
- Is this baby blues or something more?
- Baby blues fade by two weeks. Sadness, hopelessness, intrusive thoughts, or anxiety that persist past two weeks, or appear later in the first year, are signs of postpartum mood disorders. Talk to a provider; treatment is fast and effective.
- Will medication affect my milk?
- Many SSRIs are compatible with breastfeeding. The decision is between you and a clinician; the right antidepressant is almost always safer than untreated postpartum depression.
